Iñaki Urdangarin, husband of HRH Infanta Cristina of Spain, said yesterday that he stands ready to defend himself against allegations of corruption.



The Duke is accused of diverting public funds when he was the head of Instituto Noos, a foundation.

He released a statement on Friday saying in part: “[I will defend my] honor and innocence in this matter from the conviction that my professional conduct has always been correct.”

The probe is being led by the chief anti-corruption prosecutor for the Balearic Island and is focused on the non-profit the Duke led until 2006.

Among the charges are that the Duke established a web of shell corporations to facilitate the diversion of public money to the non-profit.

The royal palace has yet to address the specific allegations, but did say that they have “absolute respect” for the process.

HRH Infanta Christina is the youngest daughter of TM King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

The couple lives in Washington DC where the Duke works for Telefonica.
